MGB Aston Martin
This MGB was a one off prototype by Aston Martin Tickford in
conjunction with a consortium which comprised of Alan Curtis
(Chairman of Aston Martin), David Wickens (BCA), Peter Cadbury,
Lord George-Brown and Norwest Construction Group who planned
to acquire MG from British Leyland. The consortium had at least
£30 million at there disposal, with which to purchase the MG
factory in Abingdton. They made it clear to British Leyland that they
wanted the the rights to the MG name and the MGB. The
negotiation’s dragged on and in April 1980 a deal was struck
between the two parties. British Leyland agreed that they would
sell the Abingdon Factory to the consortium along with the right to
use (not own) the MG name. The £30 million funding from Aston
Martin was used in the negotiation’s was a little bit more elusive.
Undeterred Aston Martin showed the Williams Towns face-lifted
MGB to the press in June 1980, stating that they intended to launch
the car for the 1981 model year. At this point unfortunately British
Leyland closed negotiations at this point, due to the fact the
consortium could not commit financially at this point.
The car in Russet Brown was registered as DOL341V, in February
1980. This car was penned by William Towns, who designed some
of the great Aston Martins. The project engineer, Keith Martin, was
given a very limited time to complete the vehicle and it was
achieved in 7 days!
The specification included Tickford designed seats complete with
badging. An Astrali 13in steering wheel, a MGB GT windscreen,
surround and side windows. The rear panel includes fog and
reversing lights, front spoiler and bumper, a small chrome
grille, side mouldings complete the bodywork with 14in Wolfrace
wheels. The whole lot finished to a full coachwork finish. Needless
to say a Tickford hood kept you dry.
The car is still around and and sold a while back with a mileage of
6,800.
